PHD level is a different thing. If you want to follow an academic career path, the research ranking is more important.
However, a non-academic career path is deviated far from academic world, especially for social sciences.
PKU and Tsinghua U are ranking much lower than most Dutch Unis in terms of economics studies. But do you think their graduates are in the inferior positions on the Chinese job market, compared with those who finished their degrees in NL or UK?
Moreover, most U.S students will simply not do master. In bachelor phase, there are few things really research-related. Does this hinder them from going into the top IBs?
The reason is simple: In the real world, there are not many works which can be called "research". A top IBs equity research paper are often done by some MBA or someone never studied finance before.
My arguement is always: For business/finance/econ studies, go to the big cities, go to those prominent unis which sound better. In contient Europe, the universities of big cities are seldom being considered "bad". (they are indeed outperformers)
You can say the university of tilburg are top ranked in econ studies. The masstricht Uni are famous for its PBL. But when you are talking to an outsider about your university, the first question often is "please tell me where tilburg is? in Canada?". I can tell you that is frustrating......
