Like most Dutch universities, the Universiteit van Amsterdam does not have a campus. Student housing is extremely in short supply and quite expensive. However, the UvA will do everything in its power to arrange for housing for its international students. To assist foreign students, the University has signed an agreement with housing corporations De Key and ZVH in Zaandam. The names of the students who are eligible for accommodation through the Universiteit van Amsterdam will be put forward to these housing organisations, who will then arrange accommodation. All accommodation is furnished. Sheets and blankets are available and kitchen equipment can be bought for ? 40 (Dfl.90 approximately). The rent of the rooms varies according to type, size and location. However, the university is not able to guarantee housing for all foreign students.
How to find a room in Amsterdam
Here are some handy tips to follow when you are looking for accommodation in the capital.
* Start looking early. Do not wait until you have received official confirmation that you can study in Amsterdam.
* Ask friends or relatives living in Holland to help find a room or ask if you can stay with them till you have found a room.
* Place an advertisement. The best places to advertise are in the national dalies, door-to-door papers like the Echo and the Amsterdamse Stadsblad, and the Amsterdam advertiser Via Via. The internet site of Via Via can also be checked for rooms.
* There are commercial accommodation agencies, but some of them can be very expensive and unreliable. Try to find out first if it is a good co-operative
