The naturalisation test
If you wish to obtain Dutch nationality through naturalisation, you must be able to show that you are sufficiently integrated in Dutch society. This means you must be able to speak, read, write and understand the Dutch language reasonably well. You must be able to cope in Dutch society.
In order to show that you can do all this you must take the naturalisation test. If you pass the test, you will be given a certificate that you can use to submit an application for naturalisation.
Everyone wanting to obtain Dutch nationality must, in principle, take the naturalisation test.
Some people are not required to take the naturalisation test.
The level of the naturalisation test equals Dutch as a Second Language (NT2), level 2. This means you can make yourself understood in Dutch and that others understand what you say or write. You do not have to speak or write perfect Dutch. As an example, you are able to have a brief chat about the weather with your neighbour, you can pay in the supermarket, you can buy a train ticket at the counter or you can write a brief note to an insurance company. If you watch the news or listen to the radio you know what they are talking about but you do not have to understand every detail.
