As far as I know, some masters in, e.g. natural sciences do take 2 years, but that doesn't mean that they are research-oriented programs.

Thanks a lot, I have already contacted the programme assistant, she told me that is a a research master and would be able to apply for the PHD.

You seriously don't need to worry about it. They wouldnt do that.

Plus, it is not always good to do a research master, frankly speaking. Yes, you will have a higher chance to get a phd position right after the research master, but in some cases, a regular master is even better.

So for example, if you do a research master, you will finish your phd within 3 years. If you do a regular master, you usually will have to finish phd within 4 years. Here you get paid doing a phd. That said, compared with doing a research master, doing a regular master is more attractive, cuz you will get money for that 1 extra year....

thanks for your advice! that is really helpful for me! and I think the master I will study is a regular programme that you said, because I don't find the word " research "behind the master I apply for, I just hope that master is not a coursework master and be able to apply for the PHD. She told me that I can further my education afterwards. I think the coursework master maybe cann't apply for the PHD.

Frankly speaking, I am not really sure about biology, cuz I studied business here. A regular master should be enough to help get a phd position - that is, at least in business studies. I dont really know more.

But if your program manager told you it was possible to do a phd afterwards, then I dont think you have any reason to doubt it. Leiden is a well-respected univeristy after all.

I did a 2-year research master here.

I cannot tell you whether it is difficult to apply for a phd or not, as different subjects have their own idiosyncratic features. Some ppl get their phds; some not. You never know.
