Please note: every PhD programme is a tailor made programme, developed to meet the requirements and needs of a specific PhD research. This means that the actual costs for a PhD programme vary per research project. Before a PhD candidate is accepted at Wageningen University all parties must agree upon the budget of the entire PhD programme.

The University fee
All PhD candidates who are not employees of Wageningen University or who do not belong to the category of 'External PhD Students' are required to pay a University Fee of 5000 Euro (one time only). See: overview of PhD Categories. Only the Executive Board of the University can decide about a waiver.
Fifty percent of the university fee (2500 Euro) will be made available for the PhD student as an education budget which can (only) be used for the realisation of the Training and Supervision Plan, provided that
the PhD candidate has been admitted as a PhD student of Wageningen University
the Training and Supervision Plan (TSP) has been approved by the Graduate School

The Departmental fee and Research Costs
PhD candidates who are financed by an organisation or institute other than Wageningen University or NWO are required to pay a monthly Departmental Fee, i.e. Sandwich PhD students and Guest PhD students (see the overview of PhD categories). The amount of the fee varies, depending on the type of research, between € 0 and € 2400 per month. The involved department determines the exact amount. For example, a desk-research may involve less cost than research which requires the use of laboratories and test facilities.
Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences;
one time fee of €500 + monthly fee up to € 1000
Department of Animal Sciences;
monthly fee between € 0 and € 2400
Department of Environmental Sciences;
monthly fee of € 500
Department of Plant Sciences;
monthly fee between € 0 and € 1500
Department of Social Sciences;
monthly fee of € 500 plus supervision costs

A PhD candidate will need about € 900 per month to cover living expenses, including insurance.
