An abortion after the 24th week or pregnancy is generally illegal in the Netherlands, except when the foetus has serious abnormalities. If the unborn baby does not have a brain, the pregnancy can be terminated. However, missing limbs, for instance, do not meet these requirements to a legal abortion after 24 weeks.
And the Dutch gynaecologists association NVOG has admitted that Dutch women sometimes go abroad for an abortion after their 24th week of pregnancy, a procedure which is illegal in the Netherlands. So they go to Belgium or Great Britain under the guise of obtaining a second opinion. |
