Internships
30 Aug 2010
Many students do an internship as part of their study programme. As a foreign student, you may also be interested in doing an internship in the Netherlands.
If you wish to do an internship in the Netherlands, there are a few factors to consider. Most important is the question of whether the internship would be part of a Dutch study programme or a foreign programme. This will determine whether you need a work permit, the type of residence permit you need, the maximum internship remuneration that can be paid out tax-free and whether social security contributions need to be deducted.
Once you have been awarded your diploma, you are no longer eligible to do an internship in the Netherlands. However, you can still get practical work experience as a ‘practitioner’, or practicant, in the Netherlands. In that case, you must already have a job in your home country and your employer abroad must provide a guarantee that you will be able to resume your duties upon returning from the Netherlands. This means that you would be coming to the Netherlands specifically for the internship. |
