Dear Sir or Madam:
I am applying for the admission to the International Bachelor Economics and Business Economics program at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) in September 2010. In the following letter, I will explain why I believe that EUR is the ideal university for me.
First, I would like to start with some information relating to my background. My name is Li Ye, and I was born on July 11, 1989. I was raised in a small city called Xinxiang, situated in the north of Henan Province China. My mom is an English teacher working in a senior high school and my dad was a physics teacher. I was raised learning Chinese and English and quick at learning science. In middle school I ranked among the top ten candidates from our city in the Olympic Math Contest held by Henan Province, which enabled me to be selected to the Olympic Math Class when I entered senior high school. Playing zither is one of my favorite activities in my spare time, including playing tennis.
In my first year in Henan University, I, as the leading dancer and leader, successfully organized a dancing program performed with seven classmates for the 2008’s New Year performance in our university, which was warmly greeted by teachers and students. I joined the Volunteer Association of Henan University as soon as I began my university life. We regularly visited the children living in an SOS Children Home, helping them with their lessons and brought entertainment shows to an Aged Home. I have been lucky to have foreign teachers mainly from the USA and Australia to teach me different subjects both in high school and university, which allowed me to have contact with different cultures and perked my interest to study abroad.
Even in primary school, I was fascinated by Olympic math problems instructed by my father at home. I loved reading a magazine named “WE LOVE SCIENCE”, in which there was a file about the famous mathematician, John Forbes Nash Jr. and his game theory, and together with it was a story about how five pirates allocated their money. As I grew up, I learned more about Nash, and found out that he was the Nobel Prize winner for Economics. All these led me eagerly to get more information about economics.
After entering university, I was often puzzled by such questions such as: why have Europe and the United States made such great advances in their economies in the past centuries? Why does China have high economic development in recent years? How long will the prosperity of China’s economy last? All of them have made me curious to try finding information on global business and economics, especially in modern times. Therefore, clear reasons for taking up International Bachelor Economics and Business Economics program appear in my mind. First, such a major is what is needed to provide me with knowledge about international communication, which will help me connect with more people in the world. Second, this program will enable me to live a challenging and exciting life. Third, through case study of typical and normal economic activities, I can explore the inner laws of economics. Armed with such knowledge, I will be able to create wealth for the world.
With this aim in mind, I feel that I cannot only study in China. Choosing a program abroad has occupied my daily affairs since I entered college. One of my friends introduced EUR to me and after having received more information from the internet, EUR has become more and more appealing to me as one of the top universities around the world.
In addition, I am excited about the internationalization of Erasmus University Rotterdam. The thought of meeting new people and making new friends, especially with those who have different backgrounds, cultures and habits from me makes me excited day and night longing to be admitted as a student. What is more, because EUR focuses on the transfer and exchange of rigorous knowledge and on the development of socially oriented analytical and problem-solving skills, studying here will have me be ready for a better future career in the competitive world. Being an EUR student means being in the environment where students and faculty alike hew to the highest standards. I will become distinguished socially and internationally oriented, well prepared for being sure-footed and fully at ease working in a multicultural environment.
In conclusion, if I were accepted, I would show my potential talent and take advantage of the knowledge and education from EUR to go all out for practical economic activities. I believe what I will learn in EUR will help me in my future career. I would like to serve in an international financial company to realize my value as a student from EUR. After working a few years, I would like to go back to school again to get a master in economics. Combining the theories from books and teachers with practice, I would try to shape myself into an expert in economics having my own business at the same time to provide more working opportunities for more people and make more money. I want the opportunity to prove this to myself, to my future boss, and to you.
Thank you very much for considering my application. I am looking forward to your response. It would be a valuable opportunity to study at Erasmus Rotterdam University and I cannot imagine myself anywhere but your university.
Sincerely yours
