The University of Groningen has had close links with its home city ever since its inception in 1614. This year – 395 years later – the University will therefore celebrate its ‘Lustrum’, as the Dutch tend to call their anniversaries every five years, together with all the inhabitants of the city and province of Groningen.
As part of these celebrations, during their official state visit to the Netherlands in April, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, in the company of Queen Beatrix, will visit the University of Groningen on April 23rd. There will be a reception for the royal guests in the Academy Building, where they will meet students and staff members.
Members of several Groningen student societies carrying flags will greet the royal company, lining their path as they cross the Academieplein. Rector Magnificus Professor Frans Zwarts will then give a welcome speech. Afterwards the guests will be informed about a large-scale research project regarding the Healthy Ageing programme, as well as about research in evolutionary biology. Staff members of the Arctic Studies department will then explain current research in climate change. The final part of the visit will consist of a meeting with Swedish students who are currently studying in Groningen, students of Scandinavian Studies of the University of Groningen, and the staff members who set up the collaboration between our university and the University of Uppsala. |
