The word spleetoog combines from spleet + oog.

According to van Dale Grootwoordboek EN~NL:

de spleet : [EN] split, [CN]楔形，裂缝，
het oog: [En]eye,

In fact, the word of spleetoog can also be translated as "三角眼". The translation of "眯缝眼" is somewhat neutral.
