APPLICATIONS FOR TRANSIT VISAS
The visa section in Amsterdam has introduced online visa application procedures. This means that all applicants must complete an online application form via this website. Since the introduction of Biometrics, we no longer accept postal applications. You can submit your application in person by appointment only. Please note that our security guards have been instructed not to admit applicants without appointments. Please do not forget to bring your printed and signed copy of your online application form to your appointment. Without it, you will not be admitted. We advise you to apply in good time.
How to apply in person
- complete, save, print out and sign the online application form on this website
- make an online appointment - you will be prompted to make an appointment once you have completed the online form
- come to this office at the time of your appointment with the documents listed in the sections below.
Direct Airside Transit visa
If you are a national that requires a Direct Airside Transit visa and you are transiting the UK airside, arriving and leaving the UK from the same airport within 24 hours without the need to pass through immigration control, you will need to provide the same documents as those listed for visitors (see applications for visit visas). Instead of a letter of invitation, however, you will need to provide a reservation showing you to leave the United Kingdom within 24 hours of arrival, as well as a valid visa (if required) for the country of final destination.
DATv nationals are nationals of (09/03/05)
Afghanistan Albania Algeria Angola Bangladesh Belarus Burma Burundi Cameroon China Colombia Congo, Congo, Democratic Republic of, Ecuador Eritrea Ethiopia Gambia Ghana Guinea Guinea-Bissau India Iran Iraq Ivory Coast Kenya Lebanon Liberia Macedonia Moldova Mongolia Nepal Nigeria Palestinian Authority Pakistan Peoples Republic of Rwanda Senegal Serbia and Montenegro Democratic Republic of (including documents issued by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo) Sierra Leone Sudan Somalia Sri Lanka Tanzania Turkey 'Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus' Uganda Vietnam Zimbabwe
Please note: If you hold a valid Dutch residence permit and you are a DATv national, you do not need a DATv visa if your transit is shorter than 24 hours, and you do not pass immigration control, and you arrive at and leave from the same UK airport.
Visitor in Transit Visa
If you are seeking to transit the UK and will leave the UK to your final country of destination within 48 hours of arrival in the UK, you may qualify for a Visitor in Transit visa. You will need to provide the same documents as those listed for visitors (see applications for visit visas). Instead of a letter of invitation, however, you will need to provide a reservation showing you to leave the United Kingdom within 48 hours of arrival, as well as a valid visa (if required) for the country of final destination.
A typical example of those qualifying for Visit in Transit visas are those that need to change airports in the UK.
24 hour Transit Without a Visa Waiver (TWOV)
An Immigration Officer has discretion outside the Immigration Rules to allow visa nationals to transit the UK within 24 hours without requiring them to hold a visa for that purpose. However this waiver is not a blanket concession; only an Immigration Officer on arrival in the UK can grant it. We cannot therefore give any guarantee that you will be admitted to the UK and recommend that you submit a visa application.
The requirement to hold a visa is normally waived for passengers
- who are travelling through the UK by air, and whose sole intention is to pass in transit through the UK (such passengers may travel by road or rail between 2 airports in the UK);
- if they have a confirmed booking on a flight departing within 24 hours to their country of destination;
- if they have the necessary documents (visa/passport) to gain entry at that destination;
- if they have the necessary documentation including, if appropriate, transit visas for any other country en route
The 24-hour visa waiver does not apply to nationals of countries required to hold Direct Airside Transit Visas.
The supporting documents referred to in this section constitute the minimum requirements for transit visa applications. We reserve the right to ask you for additional documents.
The above-mentioned requirements are only applicable for transit visas. Please see the Visa Information page if the purpose of your journey is within a different category.
Please provide originals and photocopies of your supporting documents.
You are advised not to buy a ticket if delay or refusal of your application would result in financial loss. The Consulate-General cannot be held responsible for such losses.
You must arrive at the earliest 15 minutes before your appointment and at the latest 15 minutes after. Anyone arriving over 15 minutes late will have their appointment cancelled.
If you do not provide the full documentation, please be aware that your application may stand to be refused. |
