Unwanted Pregnancy
The decision to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is up to the individual woman, after in-depth consultation with her physician. The pregnancy may then not be further advanced than 22 weeks after the last menstruation. This law exists in the Netherlands since 1984. In general pregnancy discontinuance takes place in a clinic with special license. Preterm is a clinic that is recognised by the Dutch health ministry (IGZ) and is regularly controlled and inspected. For some years Preterm and the former Rutgers foundation have formed the joint Preterm/Rutgers foundation, The Hague. The treatment is free of charge for women, who live in the Netherlands, because the clinic gets the expenses refunded by the AWBZ. Women who do not live in the Netherlands must pay the treatment themselves. The treatment fees are centrally and nationally defined by the CTG. The staff of Preterm clinic helps you to consider your decision carefully and will continue to support you to come to terms with your decision in this difficult phase in your life. A conversation in Preterm does not lead automatically to pregnancy discontinuance.
Treatment „Over time treatment“ and pregnancy discontinuance
In pregnancy discontinuance the law distinguishes between the Overtime treatment and discontinuance. Overtime treatment means that a woman is not further than 6 weeks over time (that is 44 days after the last menstruation). The legal reflection time of 5 days is not applicable in “over time treatment”. In a pregnancy, more advanced than 44 days after the last menstruation, you must consult with a physician about the unwanted pregnancy. The treatment can take place on the 6th day after this consultation. This first consultation can also take place with physicians of Preterm/Rutgers. If you consider an „over time treatment”, you can use also the abortion pill.
