Dutch missionary killed in Nigeria
23 January 2003
AMSTERDAM — Dutch missionary worker, Jan Peter Baan, has been murdered in Nigeria, it was confirmed on Thursday. His father, Jan Baan, is the founder of the Baan software company.
Jan Peter Baan, 32, had been working for the protestant reformed missionary group ZGG in Nigeria since 2001.
A ZGG spokesman said that robbers entered his home in Onuenyimu in central Nigeria on Wednesday night. One of them shot Baan and he died a short time later.
"In all our years of missionary work, it has never happened before that one of our workers has been murdered," ZGG said.
Baan leaves a wife and four children.
His father, Jan Baan, and his uncle, Paul Baan, founded the Baan software group, which became the most internationally successful Dutch company in the 1990s.
At one point, it was worth as much as the Boeing aircraft company, but it ran into financial troubles at the turn of the decade and was sold off to a British rival.
