I want to comment on the above words. Firstly, nobody will do meanfulless work to waste resources. Since there is ranking like such, it should have its value. Specifically, this general rankings is only aimed to compare the total education and research volume and reputation among comprehensive universities worldwide. Thus, it can be an indicator for how strong and famous for this university as a whole. So far, we only see 2 or 3 such kinds of general rankings. However, there are many rankings for different diciplines like economics and business every year. By comparing the amounts of rankings from these two categaries, you can see the # from general ranking is less than the specific one, so indeed, it is less common, but it is very useful for the general comparision. Further, when we see a university, we look at both the compresensive and specific reputation. Secondly, such comparison is not appropriate because this ranking is still based on individual unit. Bejing university is also a comprehensive university with all diciplines, so if you say the sum of the second tier best univesities can be used to compare and you are not in the right accounting for it. your type of analysis is more quantitative by simply summing up.
I guess you don't really know the methodology and the purpose for such kind of scientific ranking by university. So if you don't know it, please don't write anything like "唉！误导了多少年轻人", because the ranking is really useful for comparing the comprehensive levels among universities worldwide.
do you think if i want to study MBA, i should go to Utrecht U than Eruamus. because Utrecht is highter than Eruamus on that list?
you are wrong. on MBA, E is the best one in NL and it is about 20th in the world, but where is Utrecht? i know Utrecht is a very excellent and famouse U, but its MBA is not as good as E. that is why someone think that we should refer to some major lists which is better to make a decision for your choice.
