Extension
You want to remain in the Netherlands for a longer period?
How long you are allowed to stay in the Netherlands depends on the type of study.
You can stay in the Netherlands for a maximum period of the number of years required by your study plus a further 2 years. This time may be preceded by a further preparatory year, if you will be studying in higher education. Your residence permit will in any case expire at the end of your studies.
If you are changing your subject, the number of years you have already studied in the Netherlands will be deducted from the maximum duration of your new study.
Example I
The duration of your study has been determined to be 4 years. This means you can stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 6 years (plus 1 preparatory year where applicable).
Example II
You have studied for 1 year but are not finishing your study. You change to another study with a study duration of 4 years. If you had not previously studied in the Netherlands you would have had a maximum of 6 years for this study. The year you have already spent studying in the Netherlands, will be deducted from these 6 years. You therefore have a maximum of 5 years for your new study.
If you want to remain in the Netherlands for a longer period, you must apply to the IND, in writing, for an extension. The IND will check if you (still) meet all the conditions.
Please note:
The residence permit will generally be extended for periods of 1 year each, but will always expire a minimum of 1 month before the expiry date of your passport or other travel document. You must apply for the extension to your residence permit no later than 8 weeks before your current residence permit is due to expire. |
