In het kader van het Shanghai meets Rotterdam festival zal de Chinese schrijfster Wang Anyi worden geïnterviewd in de Centrale Bibliotheek Rotterdam.
Ter ere van de aanstaande Shanghai World Expo en de 30-jarige zusterstadrelatie presenteert de stad Shanghai in november in Rotterdam een zinnenprikkelend cultureel programma , met onder andere: Chinese opera (Rotterdamse Schouwburg), film, literatuur en een World Expo-tentoonstelling (Centrale Bibliotheek ).
Sinoloog Lena Scheen interviewt Wang Anyi over haar leven en schrijverschap.
Wang Anyi (1954) is het vroegrijpe kind van twee schrijvende ouders en behoort tot de belangrijkste schrijfsters in het huidige China. Sinds het verschijnen van haar eerste teksten in 1976 is ze niet meer opgehouden met het schrijven van novellen, romans en essays, waar ze tal van literaire prijzen mee behaalde. Haar romanklassieker Lied van het eeuwig verdriet (vertaald naar het Engels onder de titel The Song of Everlasting Sorrow: A Novel of Shanghai ) werd in China uitgeroepen tot “een van de meest invloedrijke Chinese romans uit de jaren ‘90”. Het vertelt het levensverhaal van een Shanghaise vrouw, vanaf haar 16 e jaar wanneer ze de derde prijs in een Miss Shanghai verkiezing wint tot aan haar tragische dood in de jaren ’80. Zoals Sinoloog Michel Hockx schrijft :
[...] the city of Shanghai, with its ups and downs during the tumultuous period from the post-war 1940s to the 1980s, and the firmly articulated cultural identity of its citizens, stands out as the major structuring principle of the novel [...] The opening chapters of the novel (respectively entitled "Longtang" and "Gossip"), together constituting the most sustained literary declaration of love for Shanghai I have ever read, set up this structure in no uncertain way. Shanghai is a unique city, whose essence is to be found not in the grandiose edifices of the semi-colonial era, but in the maze of alleyways ( longtang) that lies behind them, "in a series of dots and lines" (3); not in its official discourses, but in the gossip that ceaselessly buzzes around its inhabitants.
De roman won de prestigieuze Mao Dun prijs en werd verfilmd en bewerkt voor theater.
