Earliest snowfall for 28 years
24 October 2003
AMSTERDAM ?After a near record hot summer, the first snowfalls were reported in the Netherlands on Friday, the earliest snow since 1975.
Friday's snow did not immediately disappear, covering cars and lying where it fell. Snow cover was up between 2 and 3cm thick in the east of the country.
October snowfalls have been recorded just nine times in the past 100 years, but this year's snow follows on from the second hottest summer in Dutch history. Only the summer of 1947 was hotter than 2003.
Weather bureau KNMI had warned for icy roads due to snow and rain and in various parts of the country as the temperature dropped to the second lowest temperature ever recorded in October.
The De Bilt-based KNMI said the recording of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius just missed out on the 1931 record of minus 8.5 degrees. Temperatures rose throughout the morning hours, newspaper De Telegraaf reported.
Friday's maximum temperature was expected to reach 10 degrees on the nation's beaches and 5 degrees in the south-east. Slippery roads have been forecast again for Saturday night.
