Title: Individualized choice in prenatal screening: yes or no? Ethical reflections
This project, funded by the Centre for Society and Genomics (CSG, Nijmegen), is part of the research program Normative aspects of biomedical and public health technologies of the department of HES.
Project
Genomics science and technology promise a vast array of new applications for health technologies, also in the area of prenatal screening and diagnosis. Such applications, however, also pose new questions. With respect to prenatal screening one of the main issues is whether new tests that enable testing for either a smaller or a wider set of genetic abnormalities, including abnormalities of which the consequences for the future child are unknown, should be offered to pregnant women or not. What does this mean for reproductive choice, a norm that is strongly valued in Dutch health care?
The project aims to contribute to a sustainable normative framework for prenatal screening. Both literature reviews and empirical research (interviews and focus groups) will be used to answer this question.
