Job description: A PhD project to begin in mid to late 2008 is available in the Food Biophysics Group at the Engineering Department of the Instituto del Frío in the thermodynamics and kinetics of ice formation in low water content systems. This PhD project will focus on understanding the processes beneath ice formation and evolution in food and in cryopreserved systems and will be applied to plant germoplam improved cryopreservation. Our laboratory and the collaborating ones (Agronomic Engineering School, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid; Inst. de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica; Centro de Estudios Medioambientales) are equipped with all the relevant instrumentation (low-temperature DSC, SEM and optical microscopy facilities, etc). Some of the techniques to be employed will have to be fully developed by the student.
The applicant should have a recent degree (end of studies after January 2004, to opt to this bursary) in a relevant scientific discipline (Chemistry, Physics, Biology…) and an interest in scientific research and independent laboratory work. Also students still working for their degree but expecting to obtain it during 2008 could be considered. A list of the qualifications obtained is required. A working knowledge of English or Spanish languages is required for work at the Inst. del Frío.
The currently available bursary is extensible up to four years, the first two (14,400 euros per year) in a bursary scheme and the remaining two under a fellowship-type contract. All nationals are accepted although visa and some formalities will be required. Information on the bursary conditions can be found at: http://www.boe.es/boe/dias/2008/03/04/pdfs/A13175-13179.pdf
