Duration of stay not exceeding 90 days
1. General information:
A visa issued by a Schengen country permits free travel within the Schengen area, if not stated otherwise on the visa. The Schengen countries include: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Norway, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and Sweden. The maximum duration of stay is 90 days.
A visa does not give you an automatic right to enter Schengen territory. You may be asked by border control officers to provide information or supporting documents concerning your financial means, the length of your stay and the purpose of your visit, in addition to your valid passport, visa and medical travel insurance. If your intended stay in the Netherlands exceeds a total of 90 days per six months, you should apply for a Temporary Residence Permit (MVV).
Competent Embassy or Consulate General
The Embassy or Consulate General of the country of the main destination is the competent authority to deal with the application. If the main destination cannot be determined, the application should be made to the embassy of the country in which the longest visit shall be. If the visits in different Schengen countries are of equal lenght, the first destination shall be the determining factor.
2. Where to apply:
Residents of the People’s Republic of China can apply for a visa at the Dutch representations in Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou, according to in their region of residence, regardless of where their passport or Hukou was issued.

Residents of the Republic of Mongolia should apply for a visa for the Netherlands at the German Embassy in Ulaan Baatar .
Only if the German Embassy confirms to you in writing that your application for the Netherlands could not be accepted, you can apply at the Netherlands Embassy in Beijing. Visa applications that not have been reviewed first by the German Embassy in Ulaan Baatar, will not be accepted.

3. How to apply:
Application must be done in person, except:
- Holders of diplomatic, service or public passports
- Holders of a business visa-covenant letter
- Children under the age of 16 can be represented by their parents or legal guardians
Only complete visa application files can be accepted.
If a file is not complete, the application will be given back with a list of missing documents and a delay for completing the file.
If the application is complete, the applicant is informed when to pick up the decision, which will be one of the following:
a. The visa has been approved (Passport with visa will be issued)
b. The visa has been denied (Passport is given back with an official refusal letter. You can apply again or appeal against the decision within 30 days, by writing to the Dutch authorities mentioned in the refusal letter.)
c. The application has been sent for decision to the authorities in the Netherlands. (Passport is given back. You will be contacted when the decision has been received and bring back the passport. This generally takes 2 to 4 weeks, with a maximum of 3 months)
d. Additional documents are needed (Passport is given back with a list of missing documents. Passport can be brought back later with the documents.)
A handling fee of 35 Euros ( New rates per 01.01.2007: 60 Euros !) must be paid upon acceptation of your file.
The fee is to be paid in RMB at the daily exchange rate of the Embassy/Consulate General and will not be refunded, regardless of the decision taken on your visa application.
4. What documents do you need?
In all cases:
1. One fully completed and signed Schengen visa application form
2. Two recent, resembling colour photographs (facing forward, white background).
3. A passport - containing at least one blank visa page and valid for at least three months after your return from Schengen.
+ photocopy of the identity page and signature page of your passport.
4. A photocopy of your National Identity Card (both sides)
5. Flight reservation (ATTENTION: You must never buy a ticket before receiving the confirmation that your visa will be issued!).
6. Proof of medical insurance (original + photocopy), with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000 for medical costs and medical repatriation, valid in all Schengen countries during the whole validity of the issued visa. (N.B. If your insurance company does not take back the insurance in case the visa is not issued, you can choose to bring the policy after confirmation that your visa will be issued.)
7. Children/Students: Student card (original + copy for file) + letter of the school with permission for absence, with full address, tel.nrs of the school and the name and function of the person giving the permission.
Additional documents for: Business visas or visas for short term company training:(in addition to 1 – 7)
8. Hotel reservation for the whole duration of the travel in Schengen territory.
9. An original invitation letter of the Dutch referent company in English or Dutch:
(only in case of emergencies and after consultation an invitation letter by fax, a clear photocopy of the passport /
Identity card of the signer of the invitation letter must be joined!
- on official company paper, indicating the full address, telephone and fax numbers of the company and the signer’s name and position in the company;
- stating the purpose and intended duration of stay + detailed programm
- mentioning who takes care of the costs of travel and living;
- In case the referent takes care of the costs of travel and living, proof of sufficient financial means of the company should be joined.
- mentioning if the company stands garant for return of the applicant (see text statement in annex)
- Copy of the referent’s registration at Chamber of Commerce, can be helpful for the decision.
10. An original letter from your employer (+ translation in English or Dutch)
- on official company paper with original stamp, dated and clearly mentioning the signer’s name and position in the company;
- indicating the full address, telephone and fax numbers of the company;
- stating the name, position, salary and length of service of the applicant within the company;
- stating the purpose of the planned business visit and a confirmation of the employee’s return to the job;
- mentioning who will pay for the costs of travel and living of the employee.
11. The business licence of the Chinese employer + short translation in English or Dutch (original + copy for file).
12. Evidence of sufficient financial means to cover the costs for travel and living:
- If the employer takes care of the costs: Proof of the solvability of the company (for example: bank statement, copy of last end of year balance).
- If the applicant takes care of his own costs: Proof of your personal solvability (for example: three most recent salary slips, three most recent bank statements, travellers cheques etc).
Additional documents for: Private visa for family / friends visit (in addition to 1 – 7)
7. Copy of the Dutch Passport / Identity card or Dutch residence permit of the referent (If applicable: also of the referent’s husband, wife or offical partner!)
8. Invitation letter of the referent: Issued and legalised by the townhall in the Netherlands.
9. A written guaranty-statement by the referent for the return of the applicant to his/her home country:
If the referent lives in the Netherlands: Issued and legalised by the townhall (can be included in invitation). This letter has a validity of 3 months from its date of issue.
If the referent lives in China: a fully completed and signed guarantee letter*+ copy of his/her Chinese residence permit + proof of personal residence in the Netherlands or stay with close family (invitation letter from town hall).
10. Evidence of financial means of the referent (e.g. three most recent salary slips, three most recent bank statements etc).
11. Proof of relationship with referent:
- For family visit: a legalised Chinese notarial certificate of family relationship with the referent.
- In case of any other relation than family, the relationship must be substantiated with original documents, original pictures, correspondence with envelopes etc.)
12. For Chinese applicants: an original "Hukou" document, with photocopies of all pages.
13. For foreign applicants: a Chinese residence permit, with photocopies of all pages.
14. Proof of financial solvency (N.B.Lack of solvency does not automatically mean you can not get a visa!)
For employees: A letter from your employer:
- on official company paper with original stamp, dated and clearly mentioning the signer’s name and position in the company;
- indicating the full address, telephone and fax numbers of the company;
- stating the name, position, salary and length of service of the applicant within the company;
- including approval for leave of absence
For retired persons:Proof of pension or other regular income
For housewives:Proof of employment and income of the husband + Legalised certificate of marriage
For unemployed adults:Proof of regular income
For minors:Proof of employment and income of parent or legal guardian + Legalised certificate of family relation
Additional documents for: short Study or research visa: (in addition to 1 – 7)
8. The original invitation letter of the educational institute that you wish to attend in the Netherlands, stating:
- Purpose of your stay, intended duration of stay, time schedule/programme and itinerary.
- An indication of the costs of the study/research and who will pay for them.
- Indication of your lodging during the period of your study/research
9. If the study or research is done on behalf of a company: See “additional documents for business visas”
10. If the applicant takes care of the costs personnally: Evidence of sufficient means of support to cover the cost for your stay, your onward journey, and/or your journey home (e.g. three most recent salary statement, three most recent bank statements, travellers cheques etc), original + photocopy for file.
11. If the applicant is currently a student in China:
- a student card
- an original letter from your school in China, confirming the study/research purpose (in English or Dutch, with full address, telephone number of the school, name and the position of the signatory).
Please note that the Embassy/Consulates General always have the right to ask additional documents
