This programme has continued to excel and flourish under the able guidance of its director, Prof. Bovy, who led the group in formulating and successfully pursuing a coherent and far-reaching vision for research in this important cross-disciplinary subject of scientific investigation.
The research produced by this group addresses critical fundamental areas of traffic and transportation, and rates internationally at the highest level. In addition to their leading-edge character from the intellectual and scientific standpoint, the problems addressed in the group’s research are of considerable relevance to the societal and economic well-being of the nation.
The research portfolio addressed by the group reflects the strong momentum it had achieved in fundamental aspects of modeling complex multi-class flow processes in multimodal transport
networks, and application of innovative methods for the dynamic analysis and design of complex transport systems and services. The strategic vision put forward for the group leverages these successes to define challenging new areas in which it is positioned for groundbreaking and field-defining contributions, such as risk and reliability in transport service, an area of considerable
international and national significance. The research carried by this group provides an excellent
example of successful interplay between fundamental science and associated theoretical development, and the development of innovative methodologies and tools for the solution of practical and challenging engineering problems in the real world. It also ensures that the group is well funded from several types of sources, mixing scientifically competitive sources such as the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) with mission-critical agency sources (such as the Ministry of Transport). The research carried out by the group also provides an excellent mix of breadth and depth, covering a broad spectrum of transportation processes and phenomena while retaining a coherence of purpose and vision, and allowing the emergence of recognizable poles of excellence at internationally competitive levels.
The group’s success and international prominence is reflected in its ability to attract bright scholars from around the world to pursue doctoral studies in the programme. The international character of the programme is notable and commendable, and injects considerable vitality intellectually and socially. The large participation of women researchers and doctoral students in the group is again noted and commended. Overall, the group has achieved a high degree of diversity in national origin and gender in its composition, which contributes to the dynamism and intellectual vibrancy that permeates the programme participants. This contributes further to the group’s active and highly visible presence at the leading international events in transportationrelated subjects.
The group is actively engaged in several cross-disciplinary endeavors in transportation, most notable among which is its leadership role in the TRAIL School, which groups together transportation students in diverse disciplines (social and behavioral sciences as well as eengineering and planning) at various universities in the Netherlands. Most of the group’s faculty and researchers have shown considerable initiative and high productivity in publication and dissemination of research findings in leading peer-reviewed international journals and scientific symposia. In addition, research reports and software tools contribute to the technology transfer and knowledge dissemination mission of the group vis a vis funding agencies and the professional practicing community. The group has benefited from a long period of steady and visionary yet pragmatic leadership that has succeeded in setting and achieving impressive goals of scholarship, scientific innovationand professional accomplishment. With the impending retirement of Prof. Bovy from the directorship of the group, the health, viability and continuity of the group appears assured through the emergence of an outstanding cadre of younger faculty researchers and the selection of an experienced successor to Prof. Bovy. |
