Germans Score Better at Dutch University
German economics students at the University of Maastricht are out-performing their Dutch fellow-students. Their marks are higher and they complete the course in a shorter time. According to the student magazine Observant, the reason is not so much that the Germans are cleverer, but that they are more highly motivated. About 50% of the German intake of 2001 completed their first year successfully, as opposed to 29% of the Dutch students, and the figures for the previous year are similar. The Germans are ahead of the Dutch in all subjects. Nine percent of them complete their doctorates in four years, compared to 2% of the Dutch. They also get higher marks - at least half a point more. This development has led to the university introducing a new system of marking. |
