Short procedure will help foreign student
It will become easier for foreign students to study in the Netherlands. The procedure that should lead to a visa will be shortened from three months to two or three weeks by the end of this year.
Every non-Western student who wants to stay in the Netherlands for three months or longer has to go through a lengthy visa-application procedure. It now takes three months before the 'machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf (MVV)' can be issued. Moreover, the application for the visa has to be done in the country of origin.
The 'shortened procedure' is set up by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) specifically for businesses, educational institutes and cultural exchange programmes that often have to deal with visa-applications. They do have to enter into something like a small contract with the IND.
Businesses and insitutes that think they are eligible for the 'fast-visa contract' should turn to a special office. The application will be checked there. If everything is correct the office will enter into an agreement with the 'hogeschool' or university.
Universities and 'hogescholen' do not need to fight their way through a jungle of rules to be eligible for such a contract: the only entrance requirement they have to satisfy is that there should be at least ten MVV-applications annually. They also bear a limited responsibility for the foreign students.
