Two killed as armoured car hits train
17 June 2003
AMSTERDAM ?Two soldiers died on Tuesday when the armoured car in which they were travelling was hit by a goods train near Assen in the north of the Netherlands. Passenger train travel in the area is heavily disrupted.
A third soldier managed to jump to safety from the vehicle immediately prior to the collision. The train driver was injured.
The cause of the accident on the old provincial road between Assen and Beilen is still under investigation. The area around the train was sealed off for several hours as downed overhead power lines along the tracks posed an electrocution threat.
Train passengers intending to travel through the area are advised to check with www.ns.nl or their local train station for details on delays.
Meanwhile, accident investigators are working to establish how a wagon of a goods train carrying ammonia derailed between Amsterdam Sloterdijk station and Haarlem on Monday night. The accident damaged two kilometres of track and Dutch Rail NS used buses to move passengers on Tuesday morning around the area.
NS said no dangerous chemicals were released by the mishap.
