Large penis enters Parliament
17 June 2003
AMSTERDAM ?The national students' union presented a 2.5 metre-long penis to the Dutch Parliament on Tuesday.
Under the slogan "in gelul kan je niet wonen" (roughly translated "in balls/excrement you cannot live"), the unusual publicity stunt is part of their campaign to get subsidies for student flats.
It took 15 student representatives to carry the gigantic penis to the Parliament. They offered it to Christian Democrat CDA MP Bas Jan van Bochove, a member of the housing committee, whose motion in favour of subsidy for student accommodation was accepted some time ago by the chamber.
The students' union said it wanted to show its concern that the motion had not been acted upon and rent support for students was not mentioned in the government accord agreed by the CDA, Liberal VVD and Democrat D66 coalition that took office last month.
Though overshadowed by the massive male member, the postal workers, employed by TPG-Post, also took their campaign to The Hague on Tuesday. They presented a petition with 50,000 signatures calling on MPs to back down from the plan to freeze postal prices until 2007.
MPs were also confronted by pressure groups representing the poultry sector, norms and values and survivors of the Srebrenica massacre in the Dutch-protected "safe area" in Bosnia in the mid 1990s. And a group of asylum seekers tried to attract the MPs' attention by singing songs in front of the parliament building.
Despite all this stiff competition, the large penis stole the headlines. It remains to be seen however if the MPs will be impressed by the new member.
