Amsterdam's markets
Want a plastic sheep? Or some 1950s Ford brake calipers? Or maybe just a bunch of tulips and some fresh fish. Whatever you need, one of Amsterdam's markets is likely to have it.
A trip to the market makes a refreshing change from the Hema or Albert Heijn experience. Each has its speciality - from clothes to food. Depending on what you need, there is likely to be a market that can help you out, and at a good price too. Make sure to check the hours of the one you want to visit and get there early as a lot of the more interesting items are snapped up in the first couple of hours.
For the avid bargain-hunter there's the Albert Cuypmarkt, the Dappermarkt, Westermarkt and the Noordmarkt. At these you will find used and factory-reject clothes as well as inexpensive textiles. There's also likely to be some good quality food on sale.
Waterlooplein hosts a flea market that's targeted at tourists but there is occasionally a gem hidden in amongst the sole-less shoes and plastic sheep (yes, really). Arrive early; the good stuff doesn't last long.
A grandfather clock is always a good piece to tie a room together. For this you needn't look further than the Looier, a warehouse packed with antiques in a variety of conditions. It's open Monday to Saturday.
If you're having trouble finding that special spelt bread or organic chicken check out the Boerenmarkt. It's a bio-purists' dream. Along with food items you'll find oils, herbs and candles. Plan to stay a while as there's a lot to see.
Finally, to complete any home, you will need flowers. The floating Flower Market (below) on the Singel resembles a jungle of the nation's finest flora.
