Dutch set up anti-SARS team
The Netherlands is taking the threat of the deadly pneumonia-like virus SARS so seriously a special crisis team, involving representatives from the Health Ministry, Dutch flag carrier KLM and the Erasmus hospital in Rotterdam, has been set up.
The Health Inspectorate has decided that Dutch people who develop a long infection abroad will not be allowed to return to the Netherlands if they are travelling from Hong Kong, Guandong province in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Hanoi in Vietnam or Toronto, Canada.
SARS is active in these areas and has to date reportedly killed 54 people. People will only be allowed to return if it is absolutely certain they do not have SARS.
If they are found to have a different illness that requires treatment in the Netherlands, patients will be placed in quarantine for 10 days to ensure they do not carry SARS.
Since 31 March, KLM personnel have been questing all passengers coming from Asia or Toronto to establish whether they have SARS symptoms. |
